Here’s a fun fact for you: It’s estimated that around £700 million is spent every year on unwanted gifts! Wow. What on earth are we spending our money on?! It’s about time we put a bit more effort into our present buying, don’t you think?

I have to say, receiving a generic gift is a pet hate of mine. I realise that sounds rather ungrateful and I really don’t mean it to, but sometimes it’s obvious that people have bought a gift just for the sake of it rather than because they saw it and thought of me. I’m not saying always get it right but I certainly try to think about who I’m buying for and their personality or hobbies.

But buying a thoughtful gift isn’t just about the recipient, we also need to be conscious of who we’re buying from. Is the company slave-free? Does it pay a living wage? Does it give back to the community or donate to charitable causes? Are the products sustainably sourced?

Gifts that make a difference to the recipient & the world

Christmas can be a stressful time with a million and one things on the to-do list but I’ve taken some of the work away by compiling a list of really great gifts that make a difference to either the recipient or to the world. Whether it’s through a charitable donation or by giving the gift of understanding, I’m sure these presents will be gratefully recieved. Next week I’ll share some gifts for the grown ups in your life but first lets talk about the little one’s…

“Create Your Own Calm” Activity Book – £9.99

Create Your Own Calm is a brand new activity book for kids age 6-12. It contains 50 fun and creative activities to help kids calm themselves down and manage their BIG emotions such as fear, anger and anxiety more easily. It’s written by therapist and wellbeing author Becky Goddard-Hill and it is a great way to encourage kids to look after their emotional health.

As a mum to an anxious child I know how important it is to be open about feelings & fears and to help our kids try to understand those things. The mental health of our children is incredibly important particularly in our current world of Covid-19 and lockdowns.

“Have You Had A Stressor?” Book – £9.99

“Have you Ever Had a Stressor?” is the debut book from iSpace Wellbeing, creators of the mental and emotional wellbeing curriculum for schools and children 4-13. Written by Paula Talman, a leading expert with 25 years of experience in child development and mental health, it focusses on those things that can cause kids to worry. The book is designed to help children to open up about what’s worrying them, so that they can identify the cause and understand who and how to ask for help.

Stib “World Changer” Jumbo Gift Pack – £19.95

I love Stib! Their bright, well thought-out products are fun and empowering which is everything you want for your kids. Stib stands for Spark Thinking in a Box and their range of ‘good gifts’ for children is based around 12 Spark words which are each matched to a Stibler animal character. These secret animals have been specially designed to help children with life’s ups & downs and each feature in their own Stibler story that can be downloaded from the website.

All of Stib’s prints, pencils and cards feature words such as Peace Keeper, Joy Finder, Big Thinker and Self Believer, encouraging children to think about what it means to be a World Changer or an Earth Lover. What are the qualities of a Great Leader or a Team Player? How can they be a Good Listener?

As well as sparking important conversations and encouraging our kids to strive for greatness Stib also donates 10% of their profits to, supporting educational projects for vulnerable children in the UK and overseas.

Little Sun Solar Lamp

Little Sun started as an idea to create a small, portable solar lamp for people without electricity in Ethiopia but has grown into a global project that has changed over two million lives through the power of the sun! Each time you buy a Little Sun, one is delivered to someone in need living off-the-grid. Little Sun also work with local entrepreneurs to create local jobs and to bring the power of the sun to everyone.

Not only is it cute and practical it teaches our kids about solar power. Perfect for camping or bedtime reading!

Busy Things Subscription

This is a fantastic website! It’s been developed for ages 3-11 with the curriculum in mind and with the knowledge that kids learn better when they’re having fun. Busy Things is teacher approved and is used in schools around the country. A years subscription is £34.99 and can be used for up to 5 kids in the household (that works out at 58p per month per child!) so it’s also great value for money. Downloadable gift vouchers are available so you can just print and post for the Royal Mail elves to deliver. What better gift than the gift of education?!

Planet Buddies Earphones & Tablet Cushion

Planet Buddies is a fairly new brand that has created a range of kids headphones, bluetooth speakers and tablet cushions featuring endangered and vulnerable species from all over the world. Their mission is to educate children about the issues that threaten animals with extinction such as loss of habitat, global warming and pollution. How cute is Pepper the Penguin?!

As you would expect from such an eco minded company there is no plastic packaging and the earphones come with a hemp travel pouch. They are adjustable and come with a volume limit of 85 decibels as recommended by the World Health Organisation. You also get a 1 year guarantee and free delivery on every purchase.

The tablet cushions are a great way to reduce back & neck strain and encourage a better posture. They have two little pockets (presumably for snacks?!) and are wipe clean, too.

Madeleine & Thomas will love receiving all of these at Christmas and I will be happy in the knowledge that they are all gifts that make a difference in one way or another! Will you be adding any of these to your Christmas list? Don’t forget your advent calendars and if you’re looking for plastic free games check out this post on Orchard Toys games from Fizzy Peaches… we love Pigs in Pants and Unicorn Bingo so Santa will definitely be bringing more Orchard Toys this year!
